FOLK MUSIC:
Homemade type music
played mainly by ear,
arising out of older traditions
but with a meaning for today. -Pete Seeger-
The duo “Richard and John” was formed in the summer of 2008 when John Morgan and Dick Hickman, both Westover Hills residents, decided to put together a group that would primarily play and sing songs of the Folk Music era of the 1950’s and 1960’s.
This era brought to fame such legendary groups as The Kingston Trio, The Limeliters. Peter, Paul and Mary, The Brothers Four, and Burl Ives, just to name a few. Since the folksong genre of music is not often heard or played in the Richmond area, “Richard and John” has endeavored to re-introduce it to a new generation of listeners through an all acoustic format using guitar, banjo, mandolin and fiddle.
In addition to their emphasis on folk music, Richard and John also include Irish ballads, old time music, and selected classic children’s songs when the audience warrants.
Some come to dance, some come to play. Some merely come to pass time away. Some come to laugh their voices do ring. But as for me I come for to sing. - There’s A Meeting Here Tonight by The Limelighters
